Bio
Aiwen Chen was born and raised in Guangzhou China. In 1996, Chen immigrated with her family to the United States. She worked part-time as a bookkeeper in New Hampshire for over ten years. After her daughter turned eleven, Aiwen was able to go back to school to study art at Lake Region Community College, where she earned her associate of arts degree. She received the President’s Award for Excellence and was included into Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society in 2008. She has also had numerous pieces of her artwork published in the Lake Region Community College yearbook – Prescott Hill Author Society.
Chen was awarded a partial scholarship from the Imagine America Foundation in 2011 and earned her BFA from the Academy of Art University in drawing and painting in 2017. After she graduated from college, she continued to take workshops from her mentors, Director Craig Nelson, Brain Blood, Zhao Ming Wu, Huihan Liu, Calvin Liang, etc. Aiwen loves to do plein air painting. She also likes to paint portraits and still-life paintings. She is often inspired by the beauty of nature and attracted to places where water flows. She uses a palette knife and varied brushstrokes to create textures to form depth and mimic the original objects and places. She wants her art to reflect everyday human life and celebrate the beauty of nature.
Her artwork has been selected for the AAU spring shows for three consecutive years, and she received an award for 3rd place in the category of Landscape/Urbanscape in 2016. In 2022, her work “Happy Waterfalls” was selected for the California Art Club Biennale: Celebrating California. In 2023, her work "Gardening" was selected for the De Young Opening 2023 show. The same year, she earned an Improvement award from the Capitola Plein Air Competition. In 2024, she earned an honorable award from the "Iconic California" show hosted by the Coastal Art League gallery.
She lives in the golden state, California. Since 2015, she has taught arts to children and adults in CA private schools. In the meantime, she worked both with AAU teachers and students, painting a mural for a San Francisco Fire House. In 2019, she was invited by the Golden Hill Art Association to do an acrylic painting demonstration. Her artworks have been collected by many art collectors nationally. She is a California Art Club and Oil Painters of America member and works as a professional artist.
